State Legislative Conference
Public education continues to be a hot topic at the Statehouse as we face yet another challenging year. This year’s State Legislative Conference will be held on Tuesday, March 19 at the Sheraton Columbus at Capitol Square in downtown Columbus across from the Statehouse. The conference is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The 2019 State Legislative Conference provides school board members, administrators and treasurerswith a great venue tomeet with their state legislators and discuss issues impacting public education. It is a golden opportunity to get the message out on the importance of investing in a strong public school system and putting a local face on these issues. During themorning session, school district leaders will hear briefings on proposed legislation which can be used in discussions with their legislators later that day. Attendees will also hear from legislative leaders about their respective views on public education and other legislative priorities. Attendees are urged to schedule office appointments to meet individually with their legislators and their aides following the luncheon, which concludes at 1 p.m. We also urge you to extend a personal invitation for your legislator to join you at the luncheon. The cost of the conference is $145. You can register on the OSBA website at www. ohioschoolboards.org or by contacting Laurie Miller at 1-800-589-OSBA.
National School Counselor Week
My name is Shawn Grime, and I am the new Executive Director of the Ohio School Counselor Association. I wanted to take a moment to reach out to your organizations and introduce myself as well as introduction you to OSCA. The week of February 4-9, 2019 is National School Counseling Week. This year’s theme is, ”School Counselors: Providing Lessons for Life”. Whether it be helping at-risk seniors navigate alternative pathways to graduation or teaching elementary students how to get along with their classmates, school counselors across Ohio are at the forefront of advocating for the academic, career and person/social development of our students. On behalf of OSCA, I would like to ask if your organizations would be willing to help promote National School Counseling Week among your members via email, your website and social media. This week provides administrators and school boards an opportunity to not only thank the school counselors they work with, but to also learn more about the value and benefits a comprehensive school counseling program can have on student outcomes. Below are some links to helpful resources about National School Counseling Week your members can utilize. The first link is to the American School Counselor Association and they have provided downloads of sample proclamations, certificates and other documents that can assist your members in celebrating this week. • https://www.schoolcounselor.org/school-counselors-members/about-asca-(1)/ national-school-counseling-week • https://ohioschoolcounselor.org/ • http://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Career-Tech/Career-Connections/Resources-for- School-Counselors

Cowles was one of the earliest and most noteable female superintendents in the State of Ohio. She was known for her contributions to education, abolitionism and women’s rights in Ohio. She counted among her friends and acquaintances people such as Frederick Douglas, William Lloyd Garrison, Henry C. Wright and Abby Kelley Foster. Ms. Cowles was a risk taker and stood for what she believed. She spoke out against the Black Laws which kept African Americans from voting in Ohio. She actually quit her teaching job when the school she was working for at the time refused to admit black students. In the 1820’s into the early 1830’s she opened infant schools in northeastern Ohio which were a predecessor to the modern day kindergartens. She earned her teaching degree from Oberlin College in the 1840’s in the third female class to graduate.
